Thickness options: raw stone slabs come in 1, 2, or 3cm — 2cm finishes at about 0.75″ and 3cm at about 1.1875″. 3cm is the preferred thickness for waterfall edges; mitered buildups (commonly 2–2.5″ at a 45° miter) make either read thicker at the edge.
Why usable is less than nominal
Three things stand between a slab's gross area and the countertop that comes off it:
- Edge offset. A border comes off every edge before any piece is placed — chipped or unfinished slab edges can't become finished countertop edge. At a 0.50″ offset, a 78″-wide slab has about 77″ of usable width.
- Kerf. Every saw cut removes material: about 0.090–0.110″ for a bridge-saw diamond blade, ~0.070″ for thin-kerf porcelain blades, ~0.031″ for waterjet. Dozens of cuts on a full slab add up — see kerf and edge offset.
- Layout waste. Pieces never tile a slab perfectly. Solid and lightly-veined material typically loses 10–15% to layout; heavily-veined stone loses 20–30%, because holding a consistent vein direction rules out rotations that would otherwise pack tighter.

What is the standard quartz slab size?
Standard engineered-quartz slabs run about 120–126″ × 55–65″. Jumbo formats start around 130″ × 65″, and super-jumbo runs 136″ × 79″ and up — worth asking your supplier about when a job has long runs or big islands, because a piece longer or wider than the chosen slab must seam, no matter what any run-length rule says.
How much of a slab is actually usable?
Less than the nominal size. A slab edge offset (0.50″ is a common working default) comes off every edge before any piece is placed, every saw cut removes a kerf of material (about 0.090–0.110″ for a bridge-saw diamond blade), and layout waste typically runs 10–15% for solid or lightly-veined material and 20–30% for heavily-veined stone where pieces must hold a consistent vein direction. Should I quote 2cm or 3cm material?
2cm stock finishes at about 0.75″ and 3cm at about 1.1875″. 3cm is the common choice for kitchen tops and the preferred thickness for waterfall edges; 2cm often shows up in vanities and in mitered buildups that read thicker than the stock is. Porcelain and sintered slabs run thinner still — 6/12/20mm, with 12mm popular for tops — and are commonly mitered to read like stone. Thickness doesn't change slab count math directly, but it changes which slabs your supplier stocks in the size you need.
