Island overhangs: why every seating overhang needs support

Two numbers everyone in the trade quotes, side by side, contradict each other — and that contradiction is the whole answer. Stone spans about one third of the top's depth unsupported, which is roughly 8″ on a 25″ deep top, with anything past 10–12″ requiring corbels, steel, or legs. Meanwhile a seating overhang is 12–15″ at counter height and 10–12″ at bar height, because that is what a person's knees actually need. So a seating island is not a case where support might be required. It is past the unsupported limit by definition, every time, and the only real question is which support you are specifying.

The numbers, and why they collide

The unsupported rule of thumb is about 1/3 of the slab's depth — approximately 8″ on a 25″ top. Past roughly 10–12″, corbels, steel plate, or legs stop being a judgement call. Standard overhangs elsewhere are modest and stay well inside that limit: 1–1.5″ at the front of a run and 0.5–1″ on an island side.

Seating is the exception that breaks it. A counter-height seat needs 12–15″ of overhang and a bar-height seat 10–12″. Both land at or beyond the point where stone alone stops being trustworthy. This is why "do I need brackets on this island?" is usually the wrong question — if someone is sitting at it, you are already past the limit, and the honest version is which support method the design can accept.

What the support actually looks like

Concealed steel brackets are typically 1/4–3/8″ plate, spaced no more than 24″ on centre, and kept at least 6″ from each end of the run. They lag-bolt into solid-wood cabinet substrate, and their deflection is negligible next to wood corbels — which is the practical argument for steel when the design wants an uninterrupted knee space.

Cutting tolerance on the overhang itself runs 0.125–0.25″. That matters more than it sounds: an overhang cut a quarter-inch deeper than drawn eats into the supported portion, not the decorative one.

Where this touches the slab count

Support hardware doesn't consume stone, but the geometry around it does. A deeper seating overhang makes the island piece itself larger, and a larger single piece is harder to nest — it competes for the long, clear runs of a slab and it cannot be broken up, because a seam through an unsupported span is exactly where a seam must never go. On a multifamily job where the same island repeats across dozens of units, a couple of inches of extra overhang per unit is not a rounding error; it changes how many island pieces fit per slab.

The rule that constrains it is simple and absolute: a seam must be supported on continuous substrate within 6″ of each side, and must never sit over an unsupported span, an appliance cutout, or a dishwasher opening. A seating overhang is unsupported span by definition, so the island top has to come out of the slab in one piece — which is precisely the constraint a nester has to respect rather than optimise away.
